Lynn Item article about School House Rock production

"Friday, December 10, 2010

Roughly half of the school’s 150 students are participating in the production.

Wrangling a group of more than 70 students from kindergarten to fifth grade is a brave task to take on, but for parent volunteers, Wendy Whitcomb and Shauna Hemenway, the task is as rewarding as it is challenging.

“Seeing the kids faces light up on stage is adorable,” said Whitcomb. “We really want to nurture their talent at a young age and to have them be a part of something.”

Whitcomb and Hemenway volunteered four years ago to start a drama club at the school in an effort to allow the students to get exposed to theatre and the arts while they’re young.

Four years and four productions later, the productions have raised enough money for the school to be able to purchase a new set of stage curtains. “That was a great feeling knowing that we started this club and can now give back and improve the school,” said Hemenway.

But new curtains aren’t the only advantage that has derived from the Lynn Woods Drama Club.

Whitcomb says witnessing the team-building and camaraderie that students engage in during rehearsals is the best part.

“They are learning how to perform, how to talk to each other and are gaining a sense of self-respect and respect for others,” she said. “These kids are pretty young and they"

School House rocked!

Boys and girls, you did a fabulous job! I loved the songs, and acting and the great costumes. Its terrific that you all learned so much about grammar, math and history as well!I am proud of all of your hard work. Mrs. Kennedy

Gr 4 New detention policy

Dear parents,

After meeting with Mrs Fritz and Mrs Kennedy it has been decided some of the behavior in fourth grade needs stronger consequences.  Although they are all good kids, the chatting, speaking out, and moving around during a lesson is unacceptable.  Therefore, we have initiated a detention program.  The following rules are now in place.

The students will be given a warning to change a behavior and their name will be put on a list.  If throughout the day in either class, they are told again to behave they will be sent to the office and given a detention slip.  This results in one hour of after school time with Mrs Fritz, once parents have been notified.  If this does not correct the behavior over time we will adjust the consequences as needed.

Academically, we have a full agenda daily.  In order to meet all grade level standards before June, lessons cannot continue to be disrupted.  I am sure you and your child understand there decisions are being made in the best interest of your child and to ensure that each child can learn in a positive classroom climate.  Please have a discussion with your child to be sure he/she understands the new policy.

Rewards will be given to those children who show self-control and are not put on the list throughout the week.

Study Island

I have posted the first assignment of the year on Study Island. Please have your child go to www.studyisland.com and log in under user name (last name, first initial, then lw) for example: smithjlw

the password is the first and last initial with a 1

example: js1

They can change the password but make sure you write it down. I do not get an update of who changes passwords. Mrs. Fritz is the only one who can get you that information if you loose it. (Some children have already changed passwords)

Topsfield Fair tomorrow!

The weather looks okay (60ish and windy), but I think the ground will be muddy or wet. You may want to send boots instead of sneakers. They should also wear play clothes. The children can bring a lunch or $$ to pay for food. If they get school lunch we can pack it up for them. Please remind them to stay with the chaperone they were assigned to at all times.I will be giving them all an assignment to do at the fair. We will not be playing games or going on rides. Any money you send with them will be spent on food or toys. (Please talk to them about how much money is for food and how much is for toys).I did not assign any homework for Thurs. night, but you could have them go on www.spellingcity.com Directions to our word list can be found on my previous post. Thanks, Mrs. Kennedy

Spelling City

I have posted a list of words for my 4/5th graders to practice on http://www.spellingcity.com/ . These are some of the words I noticed were misspelled in our homework journals and other assignments over the last week. The site gives them tests and games to play. It seems like a fun way to practice spelling. Please encourage them to go on it. To get to my list you need to go to find a list, then search by:
  • user name is lynnwoods (one word)
or if you have trouble:
  • teacher is christine kennedy

Thursday, day four at NC

Last night the children experienced a simulation of the Underground Railroad. Many of them absolutely loved it and learned a great deal about what it would feel like to be a runaway slave. Mrs. Fritz joined us yesterday and got to experience the role of "conductor" on the UGRR. Steven, Makayla, Paris, Breanna, and Ryan all got to dissect a turtle yesterday. The got to see the liver, heart and intestines of the animal up close. Right now they are playing a large game of tag called predator and prey with Shoemaker and Moses Brown students(about 100 5/6 graders in all). Breakfast this morning was homemade french toast with syrup. Lunch today is BLTs and dinner will be pizza. Tonight is skit night-every field group puts on a short skit to entertain the crowd. Day 3 at NC

The weather has really cooperated this week. The children are off with their field groups. Paris, Melissa, Kerry and Makayla went look at monark butterflies with Nora, the Nature's Classroom instructor. Breakfast was delicious scrambled eggs with cheese and home fries. Chris and Caitlin were our waitrons today. They had to serve their table and help with the clean up. It was fun watching them sing and dance to the ORT report. All the children have their turn at being the waitron. It also involves sweeping and wiping down the table. I am sure they will continue to do this when they go home. The girls have been singing and dancing in the cabins to entertain the chaperones. I told the boys to clean up their rooms because Mrs. Fritz is coming. No dirty socks on the floor. They are all happy and healthy. Mrs. Kennedy

A class with Mr. Intensity

Our successful water rocket
Our Nature's Classroom teacher, Mr. Intensity, taught us how to make a water rocket. Our rocket went over the roof of the building. When it came down it landed on a rock. By Steven

Nature's Classroom Day 2

Melissa, Kyllie, and Olivia dancing!
We woke up to a wonderful breakfast of pancakes, cereal, fruit salad, bagels, toast or yogurt. Next, we went off on a two hour nature walk with the field group leaders. Some children ate leaves and licked a slug (yuck!) and other found frogs and salamanders. Cam and Kevin told me they loved playing a game called wolfpack. Lunch was tacos, cheese nachos, soup and salad. The afternoon classes include: making rockets, learning sign language, and building a simple machine. I believe pasta is on the menu for dinner tonight. Everyone is having fun. Mrs. Kennedy
